Aaron Ramsdale says Mikel Arteta prepared Arsenal to claim battling win over Leeds United

Arsenal came away from Elland Road with a miraculous three points, having seen a goal disallowed, a penalty missed, another overturned, and a red card changed to a yellow. It would be fair to say that it looked like a fortunate victory on the surface.

However, Arsenal goalkeeper and man of the match Aaron Ramsdale told football.london after the game that this was a performance Mikel Arteta had planned for. Asked after the game whether the defensive display was spawned by more instinct or planning, the stopper was quick to point to the Spaniard for the reason behind the resolute demonstration.

“He plans for everything. To the finest detail, he will plan for things. He’ll plan different formations, how they play, how we play, etcetera. We know how to do it; we haven’t had to do it this season which has been good for us because it means we’re in control of games.

“But to do it here, especially here - it’s a really tough place to come and win - it’s a credit to his staff for getting us into a position to do it. We’ve done it out there today, the 13, 14 of us who were on the pitch.”

Ramsdale was responsible for making a series of crucial saves. From Pascal Struijk in the first half and several from Patrick Bamford in the second.

Speaking about his one-on-one battle with the Leeds striker, he told football.london that he relished the opportunity. He said: “Yeah, it’s really enjoyable.”

“Firstly, it’s great to see Pat back out there after a long time. You play against these people, and you have competition and whatnot, but after the game, you have the mutual respect to say ‘hello’ and all those things.

“It’s good that you have that feeling that you’re getting one up on him at the time. He could quite easily have scored that penalty, and it turns in his favour.

“So, it’s a great little battle we’ve got, but at the end of the day, it wasn’t just me. We had some big blocks and moments from our defenders, midfielders and attackers. It’s a great day all-round, really.”

After a week of goalkeeping performances of a truly high standard, following Matt Turner’s man-of-the-match display in Norway, Arsenal can rest easy knowing they’re quite literally in safe hands. However, it remains now on the outfield players to find their form.

Arteta might plan for these scenarios with the Gunners needing to dig in to claim a result, but ultimately if they want to extend this winning run, they need to re-establish the dominant style that has seen them win so many in this early period. Games against PSV and Southampton will come quickly, proving that very opportunity to shift things back into high gear.

Neymar trial opens ahead of World Cup

With the World Cup barely a month away, Brazilian superstar, Neymar, goes on trial in Spain Monday over alleged irregularities in his transfer to Barcelona nearly a decade ago, AFP reported.

The 30-year-old, wearing sunglasses and a dark suit, waved to the press as he arrived with his parents at the Provincial Court of Barcelona at around 9:45 am.

The high-profile trial is the culmination of a years-long legal saga over his 2013 transfer from the Brazilian club Santos to Barcelona.

Neymar then joined Qatar-owned Paris Saint-Germain in a world record 222 million euro ($214 million) transfer in 2017.

He is one of nine defendants on trial on corruption-related charges, among them his parents and their N&N company, which manages his affairs.

All three are facing charges of business corruption.

He is one of nine defendants on trial on corruption-related charges, among them his parents and their N&N company, which manages his affairs.

All three are facing charges of business corruption.

Investigators began probing the transfer after a 2015 complaint filed by DIS, a Brazilian company that owned 40 per cent of the player’s sporting rights when he was at Santos.

Barcelona said the transfer cost 57.1 million euros, but prosecutors believe it was at least 83 million euros.

The club said it paid 40 million euros to N&N and 17.1 million to Santos, of which 6.8 million was given to DIS.

But DIS alleges that Neymar, Barcelona and the Brazilian club colluded to mask the true cost of the deal.

Among the other defendants are two former Barca presidents, Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu, and ex-Santos boss Odilio Rodrigues Filho.

‘Complicity to defraud’

Neymar, who came to Barcelona just hours after scoring the winning goal against Marseille in a Ligue 1 match on Sunday, will testify on either October 21 or October 28, but it is not known if he will have to be physically present. The trial is due to end on October 31.

If convicted, he could face two years in jail and a 10-million-euro ($9.7 million) fine.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez will take the stand on Tuesday by videoconference to give his opinion of how a 2011 secret pre-contract deal between Barca and Neymar influenced the market.

“Neymar Junior, with the complicity of his parents and FC Barcelona and its directors at the time, and Santos FC at a later stage, defrauded DIS of its legitimate financial interests,” said DIS lawyer Paulo Nasser on Thursday.

DIS is seeking to recover 35 million euros.

– Set for World Cup –

Neymar’s lawyers insist their client is innocent, saying the 40 million euros was a “legal signing bonus which is normal in the football transfer market”.

They have said Spanish authorities lack jurisdiction to hear the case since the transfer involved Brazilian nationals in Brazil.

Neymar’s abrupt departure from PSG five years ago sparked a string of legal disputes, with Barcelona withholding its contract extension bonus and suing the player for breach of contract, as Neymar countersued.

Both sides eventually reached an ‘amicable’ out-of-court settlement in 2021.

The footballer is having one of his best seasons since he joined PSG.

His goal against Marseille was his ninth league goal of the season and he has seven assists in 11 Ligue 1 matches.

But his relations with France international superstar Kylian Mbappe appear to be strained, with the 23-year-old reportedly demanding PSG sell the Brazilian.

Neymar is also expected to play a key role for Brazil at the World Cup in Qatar, as the South American giants seek to win the trophy for the first time since 2002, and the sixth in total.

He will lead the Selecao into their Group G opener against Serbia on November 24.

Super Eagles star taunts Serie A referees after scoring in three straight games

The Nigeria international has taken to the Italian top flight like a bird to the sky following his arrival from Germany in the summer

Nigerian attacker Ademola Lookman has aimed a dig at Serie A referees after helping Atalanta beat Sassuolo on Saturday.

Lookman scored for the third game running as Atalanta came from a goal deficit to earn a 2-1 victory at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo.

The Super Eagles winger had earlier scored in consecutive games against Fiorentina and Udinese.

In the 2-2 draw at Udinese, Lookman was strangely shown a yellow card by referee Daniele Doveri for his celebration.

Lookman is known for indicating an eyeglass frame with his fingers over his eyes, ‘a look-man stance’, when celebrating his goals.

Interestingly, after scoring against Sassuolo, Lookman celebrated with his trademark fingers for eyeglasses. But referee Matteo Marcenaro did not show the Nigerian forward a yellow card for his endeavour.

And after the encounter, Lookman took to his Twitter account to taunt the inconsistency of the Italian referees.

“Luckily no yellow card this time,” he wrote.

Incase you missed it: Chelsea beat Villa 2-0 at Villa Park

The Blues went home with three points after beating Aston Villa 2-0 in their home, Villa Park, on Sunday.

The two goals scored by midfielder Mason Mount, in the 6th and 65th minutes helped Chelsea secure the win. Mount was also man of the match.

Chelsea holds 4th position with the win, while Aston Vill remains in 16th position.

Chelsea claimed their fifth successive victory in all competitions under Graham Potter, as the Blues look to continue their winning run at their next EPL match with Brentford on October 19.

Aston Villa have only won one of their last eight league games with Steven Gerrard facing increased scrutiny over his position.

Atiku’s speech ‘worst expression of ethnocentric opportunism’ – Onanuga

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, on Sunday, berated the Presidential standard bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, saying his recent incitement of Northerners to snub Igbo and Yoruba candidates has exposed his true intention to Nigerians.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Director, Media and Publicity of the Presidential Campaign Council, Bayo Onanuga.

Atiku had caused a stir on Saturday at the interactive session of the Arewa Town Hall Policy Dialogue in Kaduna State when he claimed Northerners should bank on a president who hails from the North.

Atiku, an indigene of Adamawa in the north-east, told an audience of Hausa and Fulani people not to bank on an Igbo or Yoruba for president but someone from northern extraction.

He said, “I know the whole of this country. I have built bridges across this country. I think the average northerner needs somebody from the North, who also understands the other parts of Nigeria and who has been able to build bridges across the rest of the country.

“This is what the northerner needs. He (a northerner) doesn’t need a Yoruba candidate or an Igbo candidate. This is what the northerner needs.

A livid Onanuga on Sunday described Atiku’s speech as the “worst expression of ethnocentric opportunism ever uttered by a former Vice President.”

He said the PDP standard bearer’s speech clearly demonstrated how low a man honoured with the second highest office of the Nigerian Constitution is willing to sink in search of a perennial wild goose chase after the highest office in the land.

Labour Party on #ENDSARS

Labour Party Explains why Igbo were appointed coordinators for Lagos, Sokoto

Barely 24 hours after, Labour Party, on Thursday, promised to review the list of members of its Presidential Campaign Council and make necessary corrections.

The party was reacting to criticisms generated by the appointment of a former Army spokesperson, Major General John Enenche (retd.), into the Presidential Advisory Council of its PCC.

Enenche, a former Director of Defence Information, who made the 1,234-man Obi-Datti campaign team as a member of the PAC from the North-Central, had claimed that the killing of #EndSARS protesters in 2020 at Lekki Toll Gate, Lagos was false.

The ex-General had reportedly claimed that the Instagram live footage of DJ Switch, which showed #EndSARS protesters dying from bullets of soldiers from Nigerian Army was photoshopped.

The video of his claims had surfaced again on Twitter nearly two years after the gruesome incident where men in military uniform invaded the venue of the protest in Lekki and shot at people.

The PUNCH reported that controversy had trailed the list of Presidential Campaign Team of Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, with allegation of marginalisation of other ethnic groups in favour of the South-East.

For instance, critics faulted the choice of appointment of Igbo as state coordinators for Lagos and Sokoto states.

Also, a United States-based Professor and social commentator, Farooq Kperogi, had faulted the Labour Party campaign list, saying the party was not different from the All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic Party.

Kperogi said, “The inclusion of Enenche on Obi’s campaign list is significant because the core of Obi’s youthful supporters who’re engaged because they’re enraged are drawn from #EndSARS agitators for whom the cover-up of the massacre of protesters in Lekki is a sore point.

“To put a denier of the mass massacre of their comrades in the campaign council of a candidate they support and campaign for is both insensitive and disrespectful.

“And why does a campaign that is fuelled by a desire for difference need nearly 1,300 people to sit in a council? That’s unwieldy. How is it different from the APC and PDP? In fact, APC and PDP are better. APC’s initial list was just 422 and PDP’s was 520.”

But responding to the allegation, chief spokesperson for the LP Presidential Campaign Council, Dr. Tanko Yunusa, told The PUNCH in Abuja on Thursday that the party had taken cognisance of the observations and would make necessary adjustments.

Speaking on the choice of Igbo as state coordinators for Lagos and Sokoto, Yunusa said many people complaining about the list never showed interest.

He said, “The truth is: how many of them showed interest in all what we are doing? Is it not now they are trying to show interest?

“Many of them did not show interest. But the truth is that we are happy now that they are showing interest, they are giving us consultancy and we will take corrections. Let them bring all the names, we will accommodate them.

“All of the issues that have been raised, we will take care of it. We are a listening party and we will do the right thing.

“Every observation is being taken care of and as a listening party that is ready to take over power, it is just like presenting ourselves for scrutiny to the public, and the public who (is) driving us has spoken, so we will deal with the matter internally and accordingly.”
