MANCHESTER UNITED 2-0 TOTTENHAM: IN DEFENCE OF CRISTIANO RONALDO STORMING DOWN THE TUNNEL - THE WARM-UP

Goals from Fred and Bruno Fernandes in the second half were enough for Manchester United to beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the Premier League at Old Trafford. However, focus, as is often the case, was on Cristiano Ronaldo, who stormed down the tunnel before full time. He has received heavy criticism but this sort of delusion is what made him great. Elsewhere, Arsenal are actually great.

 

What Arsenal need against PSV to qualify from Europa League group

 Arsenal are halfway through their Europa League group campaign and could secure their place in the knockout stages with a victory over PSV Eindhoven tomorrow evening. Mikel Arteta's men have won three of their opening three games this season to place them at the top of Group A.

Last week's 1-0 win in Norway against Bodø/Glimt continued the Gunners' 100% record in Europe. With results elsewhere, tomorrow's home tie with PSV gives Arsenal a chance to secure qualification for next year's knockout phase.

So, what do Arsenal need is to secure their place in the knockout stages?

Three points. The Gunners are currently five points clear of third-placed Bodø/Glimt and boast the better head-to-head record against the Norwegian side. Victory over PSV would lift them eight points clear of them with two games remaining.

The Gunners were due to play Manchester City today, but the game was postponed due to Arsenal's Europa League commitments. Arsenal needed to squeeze in their game against PSV, which was cancelled last month, and this was the only week Mikel Arteta's side had free in their hectic schedule. Arsenal will be playing the Eredivisie side tomorrow as the Gunners look to make it four from four in Europe.

Arsenal's bitter rivals Tottenham are playing Manchester United at Old Trafford tonight, knowing a win would take them to within a point of the Gunners in what is turning into an intriguing early title race. Arteta's side will be hoping that their four-point gap at the top is still intact going into the weekend's fixtures.

Elsewhere, Rio Ferdinand has heaped praise on Bukayo Saka, saying that he wishes Manchester United's wingers showed the same fearless attitude as the Arsenal man. The former United defender says Saka has to start for England in Qatar ahead of the likes of Jadon Sancho.

Tottenham press conference live: Antonio Conte on defeat at Manchester United and late subs

 he Tottenham Hotspur boss is speaking to reporters following the defeat against Manchester United in the Premier League on Wednesday.

Antonio Conte is holding his press conference after Tottenham's 2-0 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Wednesday evening.

The Spurs boss made one change to his side for the match, Yves Bissouma coming in for the injured Richarlison to switch the formation to a 3-5-2 from the usual 3-4-3 under Conte. The home side had former Tottenham midfield Christian Eriksen back on the bench after illness as he took his place among the substitutes with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Hugo Lloris was all that stood between United and a goal in the first half as he pulled off save after save in the Spurs goalmouth to deny Antony, Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Bruno Fernandes and others.

In the end it was a deflected Fred shot that beat the Frenchman minutes into the second half, the ball hitting Ben Davies' leg and diverting into the bottom left corner.

Spurs huffed and puffed but couldn't find a goal back before Fernandes curled home a second goal for the hosts midway through the second half and that proved to be the killer in a second half that brought further Lloris heroics.

TALENTED: Lara Taubman

 

Lara Taubman was voordien actief in de kunstensector van LA, met de verhuis naar New York City kwam de drang om zich ook muzikaal verder te ontplooien dat gebeurde twee jaar geleden met het bijzonder toepasselijk getitelde Revelation dat tot stand kwam op Wolfe Island onder impuls van muzikant Hugh Christopher Brown, de bezieler van het gelijknamige platenlabel uit Ontario. De aanzet voor de opvolger kwam in Manhattan tot tijdens een wandeling in Washington Park op een snikhete zomerdag met de stem van Mahalia Jackson in de oortjes.Eeen ontmoeting met drummer en producer Steve Williams bracht een stroomversnelling op gang, de door de gospel van Jackson, Mavis Staples en haar legendarische zingende familie geïnspireerde songschetsen werden verder uitgewerkt in de studio in Brooklyn met bassist Paul Frazier en snarenman Walter Parks, Etienne Lytle tekende voor het toetsenwerk.

Gospel invloeden zitten diep verankerd in de genen van haar afkomst uit het Zuiden ,de Appallachen roots vertonen enige verwantschap met het genre. Die benadering klinkt sterk door in het rechtstreeks aan de Heer geadresseerde Mercy,  ondersteund door een zangkoor. Een rivier is nooit ver uit de buurt en meandert met vibrerende zang op de tonen van  elektrische piano naar de overkant. The Water past ook helemaal in het thema en de zoektocht naar het spirituele en wordt verwerkt in een zacht, op gitaargolven kabbelend duet.

Taubman blijft niet altijd binnen het afgebakende territorium van de gospelbelt, met  een organisch mengsel van folk en jazzy tonen verkent ze  bij momenten meer seculiere paden Hoewel in Darkness Before The Dawn hangt een waas van mysterie en zucht naar verlossing  er schemert zelfs hoop voor een uitweg uit de knagende eenzaamheid door in Lamb To The Slaughter.

De titeltrack, een terugkeer naar het leven in de thuishaven en de zwoele southernsoul van het wat onderkoelde Silver Linings en Come To Me voeren je mee. Met haar bijzondere, niet altijd loepzuiver klinkend stemtimbre in de hogere regionen neemt Lara Taubman je mee in haar leefwereld. De wat ijle zang wordt geflankeerd door fraai akoestisch snarenspel in het dromerige Grace dat een fijn hoopvol luisteralbum afsluit.
