A Federal High Court in Awka,  Anambra State, has set aside its sack order on the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Usman Alkali Baba.

The court upheld the right of Alkali to fair hearing as enshrined in Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution which was not guaranteed by the plaintiff in his application.

It said it was convinced by the depositions of the court bailiff that the IGP was not served the originating summons.

Justice Fatun Riman reversed the court’s earlier judgment following an application by IGP’s counsel, Abdullahi Abdulhakeem Ago, against a previous ruling in favour of a plaintiff, Okechukwu Nwafor

On May 19, 2023, the court had declared that Baba, is an illegal occupant of the office of IGP.

Justice Riman, who gave the order, insisted that Baba’s continued stay in office was against the clear provisions of the Police Act, 2020, saying it is “unlawful and unconstitutional”.

13,000 dead: Zelensky aide reveals up to

The funeral of Senior Sergeant Yuriy Chernenko, who died in Lviv in November

Up to 13,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since the start of Russia's invasion, a senior official has said.

Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said between 10,000 and 13,000 troops had died.

Neither Ukraine nor Russia tend to release figures for casualties, and Mr Podolyak's comments have not been confirmed by the Ukrainian military.

In June he said between 100 and 200 Ukrainian soldiers were dying daily.

In a video address on Wednesday, EU Commission head Ursula Von der Leyen said that 100,000 Ukrainian troops had been killed. However a spokesperson for the EU Commission later clarified that this was a mistake, and the figure referred to those both killed and injured.

Speaking to Ukrainian TV outlet Channel 24, Mr Podolyak said Kyiv was "openly talking about the number of the killed".

"We have official evaluations by the General Staff, official evaluations by the commander-in-chief [Mr Zelensky], and they range from 10,000 to 12,500-13,000 killed," he said.

He added that the number of civilians killed could be "significant". BBC News had identified about 3,600 civilian deaths as of mid-June. The figure is now likely to be much higher.

Ms von der Leyen said 20,000 Ukrainian civilians had been killed. While that number was not retracted by the EU Commission, it was removed from later versions of the video along with the assertion that 100,000 troops had been killed.

Mr Podolyak also suggested that up to 100,000 Russian soldiers had been killed since the invasion began on 24 February, and that a further 100,000 to 150,000 had been wounded, or were missing or unable to return to combat.

The BBC's Russian Service has established that at least 9,311 Russian soldiers of all ranks have been killed since the invasion on 24 February while the true death toll could be more than 18,600.

WAR: The Ukrainian president held three meetings with Rishi Sunak

As Ukraine prepares its long-awaited counter-offensive to recapture occupied territories, the war-torn country’s military intelligence said there were likely to be mutinies among retreating Russian forces.

Andriy Yusov, the spokesperson of Ukraine military intelligence, said yesterday that mutinies may occur in Russia’s army “as a result of the successful actions of Ukraine’s defense and security forces and the de-occupation of our territory.”

Commenting on the counteroffensive, a senior Ukrainian official warned that the country does not have enough weaponry to launch the operation.

Mr Zelensky visited 10 countries and held more than 60 meetings last month in an attempt to get more weapons with an official saying “all is needed” for a counter-offensive.

The Ukrainian president held three meetings with Rishi Sunak as part of his efforts to bolster arsenals and air defenses with talks of a spring push now seeming more likely to happen in the summer.

Dirty Headlights Dirty Headlights And Toothpaste

Fixng a dent on your car

If your headlights are foggy, don’t rush to the nearest auto store for a special solution! You might already have something at home to solve your problem. Toothpaste, it turns out, works just as well on headlights as it does on teeth because it contains mild abrasives that clean enamel. Your headlights can be as clear as day again with a bit of toothpaste and elbow grease! (Side note: This wouldn’t always work. If it’s yellowing from the inside, you might want to look for replacements.)

Subsidy: Tinubu trying to stablise Nigeria, says Fayose

People on a very long que

A former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, on Wednesday, said President Bola Tinubu is only trying to stabilise Nigeria after the alleged damage of the last administration.

He also described the announced subsidy removal plan by Tinubu as “the best and wisest decision”.

The PUNCH reports that less than 24 hours after Tinubu declared an end to fuel subsidy, the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit commonly known as petrol has skyrocketed to N600 per litre from N195/l in many parts of the country.

The development equally triggered a 100 per cent hike in transport fares, while long queues resurfaced at fuel stations across Lagos, Abuja, Ilorin, Benin, Asaba, Port Harcourt, Kano, Makurdi and other major cities and urban areas.

But reacting to the removal of fuel subsidy on his Twitter handle on Wednesday, Fayose said he was convinced that Tinubu meant well for Nigerians.

According to him, I am convinced that President Tinubu has taken the best and the wisest decision for the collective good of Nigeria and its people.

“He promised to remove the subsidy, he never hid it. Most importantly, too, the immediate past govt already removed fuel subsidy technically by not making provision for it in the 2023 budget.

“I appeal to Nigerians to bear with the government for now as the present hardship will ease out with time. Removing the fuel subsidy is the best thing to do and it has to be done once and for all.

“Unfortunately, the subsidy regime has only been benefiting a few people in the oil industry and Nigeria must break this chain once and for all.”

Fayose, who is a Peoples Democratic Party chieftain, argued that the decision taken by Tinubu and considered harsh by Nigerians are needed to move the country forward.

“No doubt, President Tinubu is not a magician who can manufacture money. He can only strategically reposition the country, using his experience and intellect, which he has started.

“Many governments have come and paid lip service to all these issues, it is time to sustain our country by taking decisions that may be seen as harsh but can return the country back to the path of progress.

“The NLC and all interested parties, especially ordinary Nigerians should realize that the last administration did more damage and the new government can only be finding ways and means to stabilize the country.

“Sadly, like typical Nigerians who are always desirous of taking advantage of every situation, the fuel marketers are only interested in making money for themselves and methinks the govt should come very hard on them this time. Anyone among them found to be hoarding fuel or selling at an exorbitant rate should be dealt with.”
