Can Love at First Sight Happen?
A study published in the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism suggests that love at first sight is actually an intense attraction at first sight.
Seshadri, K. G. (2016). The neuroendocrinology of love. Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, 20(4), 558–563. doi:10.4103/2230-8210.183479
“What can develop is an intense attraction that involves an influx of hormones and neurochemical reactions that motivate us to seek closeness and intimacy with the object of our affection and attraction,” explains Kristen Roye, PsyD. “This response system can initially be triggered instantaneously and encourage us to explore a further relationship with this person that can certainly lead to love.”
Dr. Route explains that this immediate sense of attraction and connection to another ends up triggering a flurry of hormones, including feel-good hormones such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and cortisol. This creates a burst of positive feelings that can make someone feel as though they have “found the one.”
What Are the Signs of Love at First Sight?
When people experience what feels like love at first sight, or that initial intense attraction, they might have the following emotions, thoughts, or feelings:
- Physical attraction, which can include sexual attraction or feelings of lust and desire. In fact, several studies conclude that how attractive you find another person is a huge factor in whether you experience love at first sight or a desire to pursue partnership.2
- Having an instant connection that the other person may or may not feel.
- A feeling of euphoria or utter happiness, which is likely triggered by an influx of feel-good hormones such as dopamine and norepinephrine.
- Being emotionally or spiritually drawn to the other’s personality or characteristics
- Thinking about the other person often. Some studies even say the thinking can be “obsessive.”
- Desiring to spend more time with the other person to get to know them better
- Feeling like you’re “meant to be together” or are soul mates
Does Love at First Sight Last Forever?
“The development of this type of relationship depends on so many complex factors, not limited to each partners’ openness to love and intimacy, each partner’s attachment style, communication style, and culture,” says Dr. Roye.
Of course, those initial first feelings can sometimes develop into a deep and meaningful relationship like this. If that happens for you, you’ll feel an increased mood and sense of safety and commitment within the relationship. Like any relationship, it won’t be without hills and valleys, but generally you should feel like you’re a team working together toward a happy life.
That said, it’s important to keep in mind that the “love at first sight” feelings and attraction doesn’t always develop into long-lasting love. So, even if you experienced those intense emotions and feel connected to the other person for that reason, that doesn’t mean that you should remain in the relationship if it isn’t working.
“In all honesty, those initial feelings that individuals describe during ‘love at first sight’ [often] fade with time, whereas true attachment—when engaged in a healthy relationship—will grow over the years,” Roye says.

Falana Condemns Soldiers’ Killing In Delta, Faults Military’s Reprisal
Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, on Monday, condemned the heinous killing of 16 military personnel in the Okuama community of Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State last week during a rescue mission.
The beheaded corpses of the slain soldiers were later recovered from a neigbouring rivers, while the stomachs and hearts of others were ripped off.
President Bola Tinubu, the Senate, the host Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, as well as civil society organisations have condemned the gruesome murder of the soldiers and called for the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.
However, over the weekend, some angry soldiers patrolling the creeks allegedly razed the village after their colleagues were killed, even as residents of the coastal community fled to neighboring Ughelli.
Avoidable Reprisal
Falana said the reprisal was avoidable if the military commands and the Federal Government had cautioned soldiers early enough not to embark on any act of retaliation and gave them assurances that justice would be served immediately.
“On the night of the 16th (of January), angry soldiers stormed Okuama village and set it on fire. For me, it is unavoidable,” Falana said. “You can’t blame soldiers alone because there is a general notion in the society because of loss in the judicial system, everybody embrace mob justice.”
“Even the statement of the President yesterday (Sunday). We are in a democratic system of government. The President cannot order military authorities to fish out civilians involved ina heinous crime. That is the duty of the police,” the senior lawyer stated.
Falana said those arrested should be handed over to the police and arraigned immediately as this action would have doused tension in the coastal village.
He faulted the idea collective punishment, saying that it contravened the Geneva Convention and other international laws which Nigeria is a signatory to.
“There are innocent people in Okuama who are as angry as the government in ensuring that the criminal elements are brought to justice but when you go and set their houses on fire and attack innocent people, you have offended domestic laws because it is right in our country that there is no vicarious liability in criminality.
“Nigeria domesticated the Geneva Convention in 1960 and under Article 33 of the the Geneva Convention, collective punishment is prohibited. Innocent people cannot be attacked, even in a war situation,” he said.

BENEFITIS OF HELPING THE POOR
If you think about it, poverty has existed ever since society was formed. And it will continue to exist for as long as the concept of economic and social hierarchy exists.
With that, why should we help the needy? If poverty is not something we can resolve, why bother?
While there is nothing wrong with these questions, I think what we should be asking ourselves is how we can help the poor and needy.
You see, the only reason why we should help the needy is because we can. You should need no other reason than that. Helping others should be voluntary and not because we’re expecting to get something in return.
That’s not to say, however, that we cannot get anything out of helping others. There are lots of benefits we can get from helping the needy. But that should not be our motivation. Instead, treat them as a bonus, or the icing on the cake, if you will.
That said, we’re listing down some of the benefits of helping the needy as well as what you can do to help them.
Benefits of Helping the Needy
Some of the benefits we can get from helping the needy are:
1. You can make a difference
Making a difference doesn’t necessarily mean taking huge steps like solving climate change or eradicating poverty. Sometimes, it can be as simple as giving a homeless person some spare change. Or sharing your meal with a neighbor in need.
Every act of charity can make a difference. As Margaret Weiss once said: each of us can cause ripples as we move through our lives. No matter how insignificant our actions may seem, it has the potential to change another’s life for the better.
2. It improves society as a whole
When you help the poorest of the poor, you’re raising the standard of living for society as a whole. It may not completely close that wide gap between the rich and the poor, but it can narrow it down. It not only benefits the economy but also improves society as a whole.
3. It makes you happy
Have you noticed that when you help someone, you feel elated? No, you feel more than just elation. You feel that elated satisfaction followed by an exhilarating kind of happiness that can only come from doing good. It makes you feel like you have a purpose.
4. It helps you see life from a different perspective
Sometimes, we get too wrapped up in our own bubble that we fail to see the sufferings of others. We become so focused on our own problems and struggles that we forget others are struggling too.
Helping someone can help you get out of that bubble. It helps you view the world from a different perspective. You’ll learn to appreciate your blessings rather than wine about the things that you lack.
